Frequently Asked Questions for Community Development Program Volunteers
How do I apply to volunteer with one of the Community Development programs at Vancouver Native Housing Society?
It's easy, download the volunteer application form, fill it out and sent it back to the society by fax or e-mail. You must be specific about which VNHS program you are applying to volunteer for. You may volunteer for more than one program, provided your skills are appropriate for the program. You will require a criminal record check. The society will cover the cost. The Program Co-coordinator will contact you to set up an interview. It's that easy!
What will my role be as a volunteer with one of VNHS programs?
The Program Co-ordinator will assess your skills and see how they fit into the program you have chosen to volunteer in. Your input will be essential in defining your role within the parameters of the program. We want your volunteer experience to be a rewarding one, for you and the program.
Why do people volunteer with Vancouver Native Housing Society?
People volunteer with VNHS for a number of reasons. Some do it for personal satisfaction. Others do it to develop new skills and meet new people. To gain volunteer hours for admission to academic programs, as well as feeling like they are contributing to the community. These are all reasons people volunteer.
Do I have to be of Aboriginal ancestry to volunteer ?
No. Anyone who feels they have something to contribute to the program of their choice is welcome to apply for a volunteer position, regardless of age, status or ethnicity. We welcome all to volunteer with us, non-tenants as well.
What sort of time commitment is required to volunteer at Vancouver Native Housing?
We have several programs that operate at different times. A general rule of thumb is a three-month commitment. However, this issue can be addressed with the individual Program Co-coordinator when you are interviewed. We appreciate the time, energy and dedications that it takes to volunteer. The Program Co-ordinators will do all they can to make this opportunity a reality.
